South 39th St Neighborhood Council Meeting

1/20/16 South 39th Council Meeting

Yesterday evening I attended the South 39th Council meeting. It was great to hear what is going in the neighborhood and to hear from our neighbors. The council members provided pizza and punch, an excellent treat. Here is what you missed…

  • A Little About the Missoula Council

There are 18 councils in Missoula and the charter was approved by Missoula voters in June of 1996. There are around 5- 7 members on each council. The Missoula charter was created to give the citizens a say in the government and other states have modeled their charters from Missoula’s Charter.

  • Zoning Code Compliance

We head from the city zoning compliance staff. Members are working on a sensitive case in the South 39th st Neighborhood dealing with an alleged illegal occupation residence. Neighbors are learning about the steps to take when zoning ordinances are broken. First step is to file a complaint with the city zoning department. zoner@co.missoula.mt.us

  • Hillview Crossing Development

A private owner has plans in the works for a 68 unit townhome development and is utilizing the townhouse exemption. Read more about it here: ftp://ftp.ci.missoula.mt.us/DEV%20ftp%20files/Urban/SubdRegUpdate/PBPresentation.pdf

There doesn’t seem to be a lot of support for this development. One fear I have for purchasers is private ownership of the townhouses. The city would not be responsible for upkeep and the new owners would inherit the maintenance.

The meeting wrapped up after some discussion and if you are interested, the average sales price in this neighborhood is around $228,000. Call or email us today for a Market Analysis on your home today

April Wine of the Month

April showers bring May flowers…winter has lost its tight grip on us, but summer is not quite here to bask in all its sunny glory. This brings us to rosé, a wine that is not white, but is also not all red. Not sure what dishes your friends are serving for their Final Four or Kentucky Derby barbecue? Bring a rosé. Know the crowd has professed to only drink white wines, but know in your heart they can come around to your red wine ways? Introduce them to rosé.

Rosé wine is created by crushing the grapes and not allowing them to sit on the skins for very long. This limited interaction between the crushed grapes and their skins results in a wine that can be anything from a very pale pink to a very light red. Rosé, typically, is not aged for long and is meant to be drank within 2-3 years (or less) of release. Also, rosé is a style, not a varietal. Thus, you can have a Rosé of Syrah or Rosé of Grenache, which will give the same fruit expressions found in their fully red counterparts. In some circumstances, a rosé will be named after the region it is from, such as Tavel Rosé from France.

Now, you are in the wine department, looking for a rosé and come across all these wines that are labelled Vin Rose, Blush, White Zinfandel, White Merlot, etc., and it all becomes a blur. With many of the aforementioned wines, they can be cloyingly sweet and are better used for making sangria or a spritzer.  Look for a rosé from the Provence region of France, which is the original home of rosé.  From there, take another trip around the globe to see what does and doesn’t appeal to you.  If there is a red wine that your friends love and you have had a hard time appreciating it try finding it in rosé style and see if it grows on you!

Cheers!

Wine of the Month With Chris and Becky!

It has been often said, March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb.   Now, you may be asking yourself, what does that have to do with wine?  Well, one of the most exceptional things to pair with wine is lamb.

One of our favorite varietals of wine to pair with lamb is syrah.  As syrah made it’s way to the new world it picked up another name that most people recognize: shiraz.  Shiraz is most commonly used in Australia but some American wineries have also taken to calling syrah by shiraz.

Syrah grapes have a thick dark skin, which creates a beautiful dark purple wine that is full bodied and has a wide range of flavor profiles. Syrah can be very peppery, herbaceous, and earthy.  It can also be fruity like blueberries or blackberries with a range from under-ripe to very ripe.   This versatility makes syrah a great option to pair with multiple dishes from gamey meats to sweet bbq sauces.

For now we suggest you take a trip around the globe, starting in the Rhone Valley of France, then hopping across the pond to California, taking the bus northward to Washington (our favorite region for Syrah!) then catch a flight to Australia to find what style of syrah most satisfies your palette.

Cheers!

The Story Behind Missoula’s Local News Anchor

If you find yourself thinking about getting into the film and production industry you probably doubt it is even possible if you are living in the small city of Missoula. Many believe the only way to make it is to get out, move to the city, rub elbows until you can be somebody. Not for this lady! Brin Merkley is a passionate Missoulian aspiring to make it big no matter what it takes. Brin is the type of person that emulates the payoff of hard work and dedication. Read below and get inspired with the story behind Missoula’s local news anchor!

Brin Merkley

Age: 24

Favorite Place to hang out in Missoula:

I rarely get down time so as lame as it sounds, I love it when I can just hang out at home! haha but in the summer I love to be on the river or up on the M hill.

School/degree/certificates:

University of Montana/ BA in Broadcast Journalism/certificate in Business of Entertainment Management.

If price wasn’t a factor what Missoula neighborhood would you live in:

I love where I went to college and the residential areas around it. If price wasn’t a factor, I would probably live in one of those beautiful big homes around campus.

Tell me about yourself:

I’m a workoholic with a huge sense of humor. I love the outdoors, adventure, people, animals, and food. I am very passionate about film, radio, photo and television production in the arts, science and entertainment industry. I love learning and reading about everything, and will dance at just about any opportunity.

What do you love about Missoula?

The vibrancy and variety of the people. I fell in love with Missoula when I was a little girl and my parents would take me to all the Griz games. There is so much energy here and there are so many inspirational people who welcome new thought, and creation. There are good hearted people here. Since I started working in the news, I realized how beautiful the people are here at a number of community events. One in particular was a tragic and unexpected incident that became a community event without prompting. In 2014, an urban Avalanche came down Mount Jumbo, destroying a home and burying three people alive. If you watch the footage, people from all over came running with shovels and probes. The weather was so cold that day it was painful to be outside for even a minute but these people were there for hours, even days after trying to unbury and save the homeowners books and clothes to return to him when he got out of the hospital. That speaks volumes about what kind of place Missoula is. It’s beautiful.

What made you decide to go into the news business?

I always loved writing in my diary growing up and playing with my moms video camera! I loved writing poems, short stories, or just putting my thoughts down and I started doing that when I was 9 or so. I’ve loved videography since I figured out what it was haha I used to record my friends and even make little movies with my beanie babies growing up! I’ve always been curious about everything and loved to spread the knowledge and talk to people about their stories. But it’s funny because I never connected the dots in thinking these are the things reporters and journalists do until I was a senior in highschool! A counselor was helping me figure out what I should major in and broadcast journalism came up. The rest is history! 🙂

How would you describe your ideal future self in ten years?

My goal is to host my own national TV show and have my own production company and product line. I’m constantly working towards those goals and so hopefully in ten years I will be there! It is my dream to work on the Discovery Channel or the Travel Channel. I would like to live all around the world throughout my life.

What do you think is your biggest limitation?

Sleep haha eating… you know the things you HAVE to stop and do to survive haha! I feel like there is never enough time in the day.

Do you have any good advice for people interested in getting in front of a camera?

Be yourself on your best day! Treat everyone with respect and don’t bad mouth anyone, this goes for working off camera as well. Complain as little as humanly possible, never swear and remember that even if you’re on the phone with someone, people can hear a smile 🙂

Explain how having an agent works. How do they get paid?

An agent works on behalf of another person, they research and book auditions through their connections for the talent they manage. If the talent gets the job, the agent takes a percentage of the money paid to the talent. There are a number of talents a person has, and a number of agents that can find the best opportunities for that person’s talents. But a person does not always need an agent to book work. I’m not an expert in the agent world but there’s a bit of what I do know!

Favorite Thing:

When something makes you and a friend laugh to the point of tears haha and then you both can’t breath, and then you really have to run to the bathroom because you’re losing all bodily functions! haha aaaah, nothing like a good laugh cry!

Check Out What This Missoula Man Uses To Take Photos

If you have the pleasure of meeting Hunter Day it will probably be around the outskirts of Missoula or in the dark of night. This Missoula man has the skills of light to aid in his amazing photography and a passion for the medium. We asked him to share his story with the rest of us. Missoula is a place where young and old can flourish in whatever field they desire. Real People, Real Missoula…

Hunter Day

Age: 23

School: University of Montana/ Business Marketing Degree

Where is your favorite place to hang out in Missoula?

I like to hike and explore new spots all around Missoula. When the weather is nice I go up to Pattee Canyon with my dog, or go fishing around Alberton. My favorite hangout would be my old work, The Iron Horse.

If price wasn’t a factor what Missoula neighborhood would you live in?

If I had the money I would like to live in the University District, nostalgic.

Tell us about yourself:

I am the oldest of 3 kids. I was born and raised in Helena, MT. I went to a small school on baseball scholarship when I first went to college.  After one year I transferred to UM and finished my degree in 3 years. I was a waiter at the Iron Horse from the time I moved to Missoula until I graduated. Currently I am a sales manager for a medical device company called Mountain Medical, it was my first job out of college so I would say I’m pretty fortunate. When I’m not working I’m hanging with my 3 year old black lab, hiking, fishing, going to baseball games, really anything to keep me active.

What do you love about Missoula?

Missoula is the perfect mix of city and outdoors. It has a really lively downtown/ nightlife scene, but when that gets old I’m a quick 10-20 minute drive to some of the best hiking and fishing spots I’ve been to.

What made you get into the photography business?

This is kind of a long story… I had never been into any form of artistic expression ever…I went through a really tough breakup this last summer and was down and out for months and it didn’t really seem like I could find a way to get out of my depression. I had a session with my therapist and she recommended picking up a new hobby…painting, new language, just something to get my mind off what I was going through. So I bought my first camera and it forced me to get out of the house and look at things differently than I had before. It’s one of the best things that could have happened to me, Photography has given me a way to deal with my down days.

Explain how you learned about light photography and why you love it?

Light Painting is a technique in photography where you open the shutter for extended exposure time, when you do that the camera is taking in and recording all the light in the environment. So you can take a flashlight and draw images and write messages and the camera records it all, or take LED color lights and “paint” the scene different colors. Its really cool because it lets a photographer put his own creative twist on the composition instead of just pointing and taking a picture. I first was introduced to it in a photography magazine that had an article about a really talented light painting photographer named Darren Pearson @dariustwin, he does awesome drawings of skeletons and fossils of dinosaurs, really incredible stuff. So I started to practice a little bit, I can’t wait for summer time so I will be able to stay out all night and hone my light painting skills.

How would you describe your ideal future self in ten years? Where will you be and what will you be doing for work? living?

It’s funny, Up until this summer I thought I was going to continue in the medical sales field until I was 40. Now that I’ve started to get better at photography I see myself doing something totally different. In ten years I hope I have traveled across the world taking pictures everywhere I go. I could see myself living in Seattle or Vancouver BC… somewhere that has a bigger city but wilderness is still easily accessible. I would love to be doing photography as a job, sporting events, weddings, and landscape, anything that keeps me behind the camera.

What do you think is your biggest limitation?

Wow great question. Fear is my biggest limitation. Fear of dropping something I’m successful at to try something new, fear of starting over somewhere new. And fear of failing would be the most relevant.

Favorite Thing Of All Time:

Baseball. I’ve been obsessed with baseball for over 17 years now. Besides photography, baseball is the thing that helps me break the monotony and really helps me forget about any troubles I may be having, even if it is only for a few hours. I always have something to look forward to every year, when the weather starts warming up and I feel like a kid every time I go to a baseball field. It really indescribable.
